All Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF) has been removed from Bellingham International Airport (BLI), eliminating on-site storage of this legacy firefighting material.

The foam will be disposed of in accordance with Washington State Department of Ecology requirements for Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), ensuring safe handling and environmental protection. The airport has transitioned to fluorine-free firefighting foam and remains in compliance with state standards.

The Washington State Department of Ecology recently published a blog post highlighting three environmental cleanup projects in Bellingham Bay: RG Haley, Cornwall Avenue Landfill, and Harris Avenue Shipyard.

The projects demonstrate how Model Toxics Control Act (MTCA) funding supports local cleanup efforts and underscore the importance of sustained funding for ongoing environmental work.

The Port received permits from the City of Bellingham for a new parking lot along Granary Avenue, located at the intersection of Granary and Chestnut across from the Granary Building.

The gravel lot will include more than 100 parking stalls, including five ADA-accessible spaces. Construction is expected to be completed in June ahead of the NW Tune-Up event in July.

The Port has published its latest Sustainability Report, covering Port-wide work from late 2024 through most of 2025.

The report highlights progress toward the Port’s Climate Action Strategy, including a roughly 78% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions since 2019, 100% renewable electricity for Port operations, and continued investment in energy efficiency projects.
