The Washington State Department of Ecology published a video blog post highlighting 30 years of collaborative cleanup and restoration in Bellingham Bay.

Established in 1996, the Bellingham Bay Demonstration Pilot brought together Ecology and the Port of Bellingham to address legacy contamination, restore habitat, and support waterfront revitalization. The effort has since evolved into the Bellingham Bay Action Team, involving more than 14 state, local, federal, and tribal agencies.

The Washington State Department of Ecology’s proposed 2027–29 capital budget includes $10.85 million for cleanup of the Westman Marine site in Blaine Harbor, supporting plans to redevelop the property into a do-it-yourself boatyard.

Additional proposed allocations include $2.15 million for Georgia-Pacific West, $315,000 for Sea K Fish, and $5.41 million for the South State Street Manufactured Gas Plant cleanup. Funding remains subject to legislative approval during the 2027 state budget process.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has approved the resumption of international maritime cargo imports at the Bellingham Shipping Terminal (BST) for automobiles, breakbulk cargo, and project cargo.

The approval followed a security review by federal customs officials and was granted subject to the types of cargo handled. This milestone expands the terminal’s ability to accommodate international shipments and supports continued development of maritime cargo operations.
